Question of the Day - Photography

The Zone System

Zone system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "This classic rule was stated in this way: “Expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights”."

The classic rule has been restated for digital film: expose for highlights, post-process for shadow detail.

I used to shoot Kodachrome slide film by the caseload, and there the rule was "Expose for the highlights and print for the shadows". I have found that mapping to work pretty well for digital, although there are all sorts of weird games you can play in Photoshop that I could never play with those slides :-).

I suspect that we'll see all sorts of interesting possibilities open up as the resolution and dynamic range of digital sensors continues to improve. There's no real reason we can't have 100+ megapixels at 24+ bits. At some point we'll no longer be able to see the difference or care, but we're certainly not there yet. (All of which bodes very well for the storage companies!)

If you're interested in playing around with a digital version of the zone system you might try LightZone. It attempts to directly implement a digital zone system, and is pretty usable. It's not free, and I have issues with things like their selection tools, but the idea is good and I was able to use the demo version to good effect on, for example, this moose photo. Didn't quite like it enough to pay for it when the demo ran out, but I do find myself thinking that it would be useful now and then...
